In a surprise move, Carine Roitfeld announced she will step down as editor in chief of French Vogue at the end of January.

“It’s 10 years that I’m editor of the magazine,” Ms. Roitfeld, one of the most influential editors in the fashion business, said in a telephone interview. “I think it’s time to do something different.”

Last night, underneath the shabby opulence of a dozen or so sparkling chandeliers, mismatched and hanging at different heights from the ceiling of one of the ball rooms at the Pierre Hotel, an array of top models—Dree Hemingway, Siri Tollerod, and Lindsey Wixson among them—wore one-of-a-kind versions of Alber Elbaz’s new Lanvin for H&M collaboration, slinking, flirting, and vamping down the runway in bright patterned tights, amazing costume jewelry, and gowns made up of sexy mishmashes of bows, ribbon, and poofy fabric. Set against the Pierre’s rarified setting, this didn’t feel like fashion for the masses so much as an exclusive collection narrowed down to its more tarty elements. It isn’t always clear exactly what brands dripping in luxury hope to get out of such dips into the more shallow end of the pool. But they clearly are getting something. And if there were any doubt, Anna Dello Russo, dressed in a hot pink one-shoulder number, prancing under the bright lights with a poodle in tow, made things crystal clear: these were true Lanvin girls.

Maybe he’s immortal. As recently as a few months ago, Chanel designer-for-life Karl Lagerfeld refused to acknowledge that someday, his fashion home for the past 38 years will need to appoint a successor. ‘Retirement is not one of the topics with which I deal. Why should I?’ the 77-year-old asked.

But yesterday, Lagerfeld added his voice to the whispers about Chanel’s next designer, saying that he wants Haider Ackermann to take the reins after his departure.

‘I have a contract for life so it all depends on who I would like to hand it to. At the moment I’d say Haider Ackermann,’ he told Numero, as quoted by WWD.

Belgian designer Ackermann was, understandably, flabbergasted. He responded, ‘What can one possibly say to such a phrase?! Such a compliment! Honoured I feel, how can one not be?! In all honesty tremendously, immensely touched especially coming from Monsieur Lagerfeld.’

Lanvin designer Alber Elbaz is rumoured to have his eye on the job, and we're not sure the choice is really Lagerfeld's to make. Either way, this succession battle -- shall we call it a war of the camellias? – looks to be heating up.

Who ever does eventually replace the Karl will have big shoes to fill or is that big fingerless gloves to fill. I adore the idea of Haider, love his clothes and Alber?, seriously adore him.
